This Christmas season during the carol singing we will be yarnbombing the square on the Spui with knitted angels. The angels represent the eternal message of God’s love for everyone. We will be offering the angels – free – to passers-by – a small act spreading a bit of love around. In case you’re unfamiliar with yarnbombing, here are some examples!
The angels will be knitted by us! So we need to start knitting now aiming for a minimum 500 angels knitted and decorated by Christmas. If you can knit, cast on and cast off then you can knit an angel. Attached to this message is a very simple pattern.
Should you want to crochet, embroider an angel, or create a more ambitious version then please – feel free to do this. Remember – they will be hung up on trees and lampposts so a small version is probably most practical. We are hoping to involve many institutions around the Begijnhof: ladies of the Begijnhof, the many churches close by, the bars and shops on the square.
Please come along with your needles and wool (any colour) and we’ll knit together. If you prefer you can use one of our starter packs (wool, needles, pattern), which will be available on those dates. A donation for these would be gratefully received.
We also invite those who can’t knit to participate – decorating the angels, working out ways to hang them up, involving the institutions around the Spui – there is no getting out of this one 😉
And if you feel you’d like to offer a donation to help with the purchase of materials there will a box for donations in the vestibule every Sunday morning. To give you an idea of cost: wool for an angel costs approx. € 0.25, knitting needles cost € 1, materials for hanging up and publicity are not calculated yet. So as you can see, a small donation goes a long way.
There has to be an angel in all of us so looking forward to seeing them emerge. Please come along to the KnitIns in March, look out for notices of the ones in April and if you have any questions or ideas please get in touch with Sally Stone (email@example.com) or Gillian Walker (firstname.lastname@example.org).
