Benefit Concert for Mulanje - November 22nd, 2008

Last year acclaimed pianist Ronald Brautigam performed a benefit concert in our church for the Mulanje Mission Hospital in Malawi. Those who where there will remember the electric atmosphere of that evening. Our building has witnessed many high standard musical performances, not least on Sunday mornings, but this concert was surely something extraordinary.
Now Ronald Brautigam will perform for Mulanje again, this time together with two other musicians: Giles Francis (violin) and Fred Edelen (cello). The music will be great (Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart) and so is the cause: the refurbishment and extention of the Mother & Child Clinic of the hospital.
This clinic plays a critical role in the reduction of maternal and child mortality and in reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. However, the building is in such a bad shape that is impossible to provide patients with even basic services. The roof is leaking, sanitary provisions are damaged or blocked, and furniture is lacking so that pregnant women have to sit on the ground while waiting for their regular check. Maybe even more dramatic is this: there are no rooms to offer the privacy that is needed to discuss the results of HIV-tests in a dignified manner. Some abstain from testing because of this. Ever more women are turning to the hospital for preventative healthcare, including vaccination and medical supervised deliveries, and improvement of the clinic is urgent.
We hope to raise about 10.000 euro's, so that building activities can start in the beginning of 2009.
Our support can have a long lasting impact in Malawi.
